- Dynamic Array Formula Excel
Hi, I have a major problem which stemmed from when I was trying to edit/delete (I can't remember) an array formula from a single cell. I have been trying to delete the formula by selecting the whole range of cells, but Excel won't let me leave the cell in question and everything else I do (whether clicking on another cell, clearing the contents of the cell and pressing enter, trying to restore the original formula) results in the error message 'You cannot change part of an array', yet when I try to quit Excel or even log out or shut down I get 'Cannot quit Microsoft Excel'. Is this some sort of bug and have I no choice but to shut the computer down manually, which I don't like doing (fortunately I haven't done much unsaved work that this would affect)?
- EWE: “Engineering With Excel” Larsen Page 2 Key to understanding the use of matrix operations is the concept of the matrix (array) formula. Such a formula uses matrix functions and returns a result that can be a matrix, a vector, or a scalar, depending on the computations involved.
- Formula overlap - Array formulas can't be input if there is anything blocking the output range. And if this happens, Excel will return a #SPILL! Error indicating that there is a blockage. If you remove the blockage, the formula will spill as expected.
Many Excel users, including me, are prejudiced against array formulas and try to get rid of them wherever possible. Luckily, Microsoft Excel has a few functions that handle array natively, and we can use one of such functions, namely SUMPRODUCT, as kind of 'wrapper' around MAX. The generic MAX IF formula without array is as follows. In general, array formulas use standard formula syntax. They all begin with an equal (=) sign, and you can use most of the built-in Excel functions in your array formulas. The key difference is that when using an array formula, you press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to enter your formula. How do you enter an array formula in Microsoft Excel 2016 for Mac? Officially, the key combination is CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER, which matches Excel for Windows. You may see this referred to as ‘CSE’. I’m using Excel 2016 for Mac, and the combination COMMAND + SHIFT + ENTER can also be used.
